Quorn Ultimate Burger

I have a long history with Quorn products – at least the vegetarian ones. I’ve been using them in my cooking since leaving university in the late 90s. On the whole, I think they’re a mixed bag – some good, some not so good. There’s enough to say about Quorn as a meat-free range of food options that I could fill a whole separate post, so I will do at some point in the future.

For now though, I’m going to concentrate on these little fellas – the Quorn Ultimate Burgers; part of the brand’s recently introduced vegan range.

Tastes like meat?

Frankly, yes. At least, it tastes pretty much like the mid-range burgers you’d find in a supermarket meat aisle. Not the fancy ones that are purportedly made with prime cuts and laced with spices and caramalised onion. Just your run-of-the-mill beefburger – the kind you might buy in bulk for a barbeque. But as a contrast to the cardboard-a-like burger from their vegetarian range, these are on a different level.

Easy to cook with?

Absolutely. Holds together really well and cooks through quickly – 10-12 minutes.

Value for money?

Not so much. A pack of two will set you back the same amount as a pack of six of their vegetarian burgers. Yes, those burgers are much smaller and are pretty unpleasant, but I still think that burgers shouldn’t be sold in packs of less than four, even the ‘Taste the difference’ meat ones. These are sizeable burgers so, depending on your appetite (and portion control), you can probably get two meals out of a single pack, but I still don’t think it’s particularly good value.

FINAL VERDICT

Up to this point, these are far and away the best meat replacement burgers I’ve tried. There’s always a small amount of compromise and balancing expectations when trying to replace meat with a plant-based option, but I think that these are about as good as it gets off the supermarket shelf. Shame it’s just a two pack…
